A Lutheran school I taught at had the same problem. I suggest that the middle school children are given something to look forward to in those grades. Then they would say, "I can't leave because I'll miss out on.....(class trip, party, etc. ) Plus, I think the teachers need to be excellent and have a good rapport with the kids.
