I am interested in pursuing a doctoral degree through an on-line program. Please share your experiences with on-line schools (good/bad). I appreciate your help!

JD Sure, times are a-changin', but at this moment, some employers will pass you over if you attempt to get hired by showing them an online degree. I would definitely steer clear of University of Phoenix. Here is a link to a few posts discussing UOP:

While these are only a few complaints against the school, if you search around on the site, you will notice dozens more. I think your best bet is to do your research before you jump into an online program. Respected brick and mortars offer certificates in various disciplines, but I'm pretty sure they don't offer PhD programs. I've heard of students attending traditional doctoral programs, and teaching part- time, either as an adjunct professor or as a substitute teacher in nearby school districts. It's challenging, I'm sure, but not impossible to accomplish.

Also, RE: Hardy Parkerson, B.A., J.D., is this the same lawyer that got disbarred in Louisiana back in 2007? Just wondering...

Doctoral Student I am getting my Ed.D at Walden University and anyone who tells you that it is easier or not as difficult as a 'brick and mortar" school is just plain wrong. You need to be more organized, prepared, and grades are earned not given! I chose an on-line degree because I have a job and a family to attend to so I couldn't quite my job as I was told to do...See More

I responded earlier about on-line schools and their reputations in higher ed. I don't take back what I said, but Walden does have a better reputation in higher education than most of the other non brick-and-mortar schools. I personally know two Walden grads who are teaching at major universities. If you look at the Walden website it looks like the website of a major university. Many of the other on-line schools can't say that.
