I know that the problem I have is not a "new item" hitting college campuses right now. It has been a problem and seems to be getting increasingly worse. I teach in a small community college and I have been hired to teach reading. I am not talking about a reading course that enhances learning. I am talking about a reading course to teach students to read. This semester is worse than ever. I have students who are reading at the 1.3 level. Being a community college with an open door policy is what is bringing these students to our college. And most of my clientele are the athletes. Do ANY OF YOU know of a good program or good methods to use on this level of a student? I need to bounce some ideas off of you -- the experts. And please take into consideration the motivation factor. Many of the students are only taking class in order to retain their scholarship to play sports. So, I want to hear from you.
