It was announced in the paper today that our district will not be issuing pink slips for the first time in four years. Can I just tell you how relieved I am? We have so many teachers (and COUPLES!) who have received pink slips every year for the past three years (and I'm sure it has been the same for you in most of your districts as well). We often lose really good teachers to other districts because they don't want to wait to see if they will be rehired by ours. THANK GOODNESS we can get rid of that end of the year angst this time and keep some really good teachers on board.

Jan What great news! Teachers are so demoralized when the pink slips go out even when they don't personally get one. It's a very tough situation for everyone when March 15 brings a raft of pink slips.

dc You'rs so right, Jan.....the whole issue becomes morale-busting, even for those who don't get pink slips. Then we have the issues of "well if you would just vote to have furlough days and/or take a pay cut, then I wouldn't lose my job!" "Yeah, well, if you would just leave, then I could retire with more of my salary. I've been taking pay cuts for 5...See More

Erin Well, our district, for the first time, issued pink slips...50 total K-8! I appreciate what you said DC about the mixed emotions...I did not get a slip, but neither can I afford more furlough days! It is a tough place to be. I pray that the issue can be resolved without all the layoffs!

nyteach I'm in NY. I don't know what "furlough days" are. We teach a minimum # of days a year..... do they just decide not to pay you for some days??

We have a Union in NYS. Our union recommends that we not agree to a pay freeze to "save some jobs" because in reality, you don't know if those ppl would be laid off anyway, even if/after you agreed t...See More

dc Oh, I'm so sorry, Erin. It's so tough to go through that. Our district went through massive pink slips for four years in a row. It's not fun. Take care.
