I'm excited about a new book for older kids

I read somewhere that it's for grades 6+, but of course I can't find the grade recommendation now.

I'm VERY excited about this book that was on my doorstep today when I got home from vacation: Texts and Lessons for Content-Area Reading by Daniels and Steineke (pub. Heinemann) 23 great strategy lessons with 1 page text (from newspapers, magazines, etc.). There are also 10 text set lessons--really amazing. Years ago I saw Katie Wood Ray and she suggested teaching from what she called "stacks;" these were piles of articles, etc., to support the lesson/unit. I was just never able to pull it all together. Now, here it is--done for me!

There's too much for me to describe, but it's been a long time since I was ready to scrap my curriculum for one new text. Fortunately, my lesson plan book is at home and I read through my reading launch lessons and they're fabulous (so humble, I know) so I'll have to figure out how to use this wonderful resource.

So many resources created for K-5, or grades 3-5, use text or subject content that is too easy/immature to present a challenge for my 5th graders and the resources for 6- 8 are too hard or are about issues that aren’t age appropriate. (The Comprehension Toolkit for 3-5 seems to balance it all out fairly well, though.)

Then there is the issue with the Common Core that we are to work on next year, then implement and test the following year. CC wants kids reading “more challenging” text, especially non- fiction. So perhaps these lessons and articles might be a good resource if the subject matter of the instructional articles/texts is suitable for 10 year olds. What do you think about the content/subject matter of the pieces?

Common Core is taking on Guided Reading and the whole concept of leveled reading.

Shanahan says it better than I ever could. I'm looking forward to see what else he has to say about it.

Parker 1. It's good to know the articles seem appropriate and engaging. I think I might have to get this book.

2. I caught that too, and at first I thought it was a typo and he meant encourages, not discourages.
