In Pathways, Calkins makes quite a point of criticizing teaching children to relate to text personally. She says it's ONLY about analyzing the text. As a reader, I'm having a little trouble with this because I think the joy of reading comes from connections and discussion. However, I also understand that we want kids to be critical readers. I know Calkins and Keene had words and this might have been Calkins' chance to get back at Keene, but I'm buying into the standards without reservation. Do you think they're really telling us to omit personal interpretations of text? Judy

judy5ca Thanks, Linda. When I carefully read the "close reading" lessons, I'm just not seeing a lot that's different from what we're doing (except for allowing BK and relevant connections). Am I missing something?

Linda Judy, I guess I have read too much from the net, but I don't have a good feeling about common core. I'm not confident that someone who has never taught before can write standards for the whole nation. And if the standards are for the whole nation then why are 2 different companies (PARCC and Smarter Balance) going to write the assessments. They are...See More
