Hello~ This is my first year teaching language arts (7 years in math). I have a bunch of ideas/strategies to use for struggling readers, but need help with the advanced readers. I teach fourth grade and the reading levels vary from 1st to 8th grade levels.
Need enrichment ideas for my advanced readers!! Thanks.
I just let them read. They usually love to. I keep a list of excellent books and recommend books to them. I keep a classroom library with those books at hand.
I suggest The Giver and Gathering Blue and Holes for advanced 4th graders. Let them read. If you can, make time to discuss the reading with them. Let them give presentations on why they love their favorite book - let them convince others it's the best book ever but - let them read. If they love animals, suggest Black Beauty. Reading is in and of itself an enrichment. If they love fantasy, try The Book of Three and its many sequels.

I think the first question is WHY the students had difficulty with the assessment. Can they decode with fluency at the level of the assessment? Is there an issue with comprehension? Are the higher level (reasoning, inferential questions) causing the problem?
Once you know this information, you will know where to begin and choose a program. My guess...you'll have all of these issues within the group. This means you may need to have smaller study groups within the session to target specific needs.
for novels, do you prefer extensive, all-inclusive teachers' guides that you can tailor for the particular needs of your class or compact, one-size-fits-all versions that are ready to use? Why? (When answering, please provide your grade level)

Does anyone have good suggestions for apps? We foun...See MoreHello! My mother is a 6th grade reading and writing teacher. Her administration bought 6 iPads to use in the class. She asked me to come over and help her find some iPad apps for her to use in her class.
I am having a really hard time finding apps on the iPad which she can use.
Does anyone have good suggestions for apps? We found one good Civil War app, but that's about it.
I teach a below level reading class and thought that travel brochures would make for some short expository reading lessons. I've asked some family members who've recently done some traveling to collect brochures and to-go menus for me. I'm looking for some more lesson ideas to improve reading skills. What would you use them for?
