I am wondering if there is a list out there with what chapter books are taught with the various comprehension strategies. Does anyone have one or know where I can find one? Thanks so much!
The problem is, I don't know how to set it up. The reading will be on their own, but I'd like to present awards or incentives for doing this. We have an awards ceremony at the end of the year as well so something could be tied into that. Many of our students get "stuck" in a certain book series, which isn't the worst because they are reading, but I'd like to encourage them to read books they wouldn't normally pick up. We use AR at our school as well.
Does your school have business partners? In our school, Dunkin Donuts donated doughnut holes once a month to a teacher who was doing before-school book clubs. The kids were willing to give up their morning time with the lure of free donuts
I attended a training with the two sisters last month,a nd am currently leading a discussion group with two of their books. Has anyone out there implemented these systems in their classroom? What results have you had?

I started teaching lessons using the cafe menu and using the daily 5 format halfway through the school year. We did not have notebooks last year. I am really looking forward to implementing all aspects of the program this year. I saw some tremendous growth in just a short time last year, especially in the area of comprehension.
I am trying to find some examples of successful summer reading programs. Tried one this summer and it was a flop. How do we get them to read inthe summer? Especially in low SES areas?
I just wrote a blog post wrapping up a six part series on a silent reading institute I attended. Towards the bottom of the post, I share a link to a chapter about studies that have been conducted where researchers try different things to see what is most effective for getting students to read over the summer. The chapter is called, “Can Silent Reading in the Summer Reduce Socioeconomic Differences in Reading Achievement?” (White & Kim).
I don't think it is exactly what you are looking for, but it may be of interest. There is also a link to a webinar related to that chapter and a link to some materials you can download for free.
If you are interested, here is the post: [link removed]
Good luck on your mission. The summer slide affects so many of our most at-risk children.
I am teaching a 1/2 combo using Open Court. Any suggestions on how to teach both grade level Open Court subject matter in the same day?? I have taught combos in the past, but never with seperate curriculms. ANy suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Instead of doing regular DOL this year, I am wanting to do it in reverse. Does anyone have experience in doing this? If so, I would love to know how you set up your lesson(s). Thanks.
I truly want to help these kids. Had some great success stories last year even though I had a really rough class to work with. But I also taught SS and Science. Now I have too much time (if that is possible). Not sure how to do this. Any ideas? Thanks
