Reading Teachers Chatboard

Help teaching Reading and Math all day

I need help! Where else would I go but to Teachers Net? I am a 5th grade teacher. Since we are on the school improvement list, we have been told to teach nothing but reading and math all day. I have never done this and find myself at a loss. Problems: Very small room. Wall to wall students. No room to set up centers. No hard discipline problems this year, (whew!) but have very chatty kids. Levels are from first grade through 7th. Advantages: Accelerated Reading. Accelerated Math. Harcourt Storytown. Saxon Math. 6 computers, most of which I have purchased myself. Great co-workers including the administration. Admin will work with us any way possible except for money (lol). I know, this is unusual, but they really are great to work for.

I truly want to help these kids. Had some great success stories last year even though I had a really rough class to work with. But I also taught SS and Science. Now I have too much time (if that is possible). Not sure how to do this. Any ideas? T...See More

Nicole Schaben Don't you have a huge binder of GLE requirements or curriculum maps/blueprints that guide you on what to teach?

Holly Golightly I'm assuming that a different teacher is teaching science, right? Please clarify: are you self-contained or do you switch for other subjects and you are the reading/math teacher for the grade level?
