I am teaching two 7th grade special ed students (struggling readers...approx 5th grade level). What are some good activities or lessons to teach inferencing. I would like them to be able practice and then apply what they know while they read. Thank you.

Sean Cumming Try to teach them the difference between "inference" and "observation." Understanding the subtle difference between these two words, I believe, is the key to understanding inference. Ed I like logic puzzle for teaching inferencing. It's an indirect way of teaching it but if you teach them to develop deductive reasoning and then teach them to deduce and infer when reading longer bits of text they have a frame of reference and an experience being successful. agsrule! Use Comic strips. They have to infer what the joke is because it's not said outright.

Picture book called Goodbye Book by Judith Viorst. It only has the words of the child, so I have my students fill in the words of the parent based on what the child says.
