Dyslexia tips please?

Hello, my name is Kai, and I'm a student at Bradley University, I'm novice teaching currently and wanted to ask for some help from people with experience.

I have a friend who recently came to me for help with managing her dyslexia. Now, she is an engineering student, 20 years old, and is a decent reader. The problem is now she is at a co-op internship with a large engineering company and is struggling to read through all of the reports that end up on her desk.

As I said before, she is a decent reader, so it isn't that she can't make it through the reports, but that it takes her far too long. I was wondering if there were any tips I could pass along to her, or things I could work with her on to improve her reading skills. I tried looking through articles and books, but they only focus on young children.

Wow, she learned well from her teachers that rely too much on strategy and not enough on making reading automatic. Got to love those context cues that might seem to work in the classroom but when you get to the real world and use only that strategy to get you by because you lack the basic decoding skills you can't perform!

I'm so happy you are trying to help your friend.

If she can get this information coming to her on the computer she can use software such as Read Please (one word) to read it to her. Some operating systems also have readers built in. That may serve her better.

There are somewhat expenstive software packages, Kurtzweil for one, that will allow her to scan the document and have it read to her as it highlights the words. It also comes with speech to text to help with the creation of documents.

When dyslexics aren't remediated properly they need to spend the remainder of their lives living on accommodations unless they have intensive remediation to overcome the deficit area (in this case decoding).

It sounds like she has worked hard to become an effective reader. She needs to be congratulated. I have no doubt she is also going to be an excellent engineer as people with dyslexia often have high level strategic, visual and creative abilities.

She is at risk here though as I have heard of many stories where huge workloads full of report reading and writing can become too stressful for people who have dyslexia. My recommendation would be to invest in a text reader. She could scan the report pages, download them to her computer, put a set of headphones on and let her computer do the reading for her as she scans the document with her eyes. This exercise can also help to improve her vocabulary and fluency skills. There are many text reader on the market. Use Google and find on or check with a tech expert at a college to get a suitable recommendation.
