I have started doing the Daily Five, but, the students just read books off of the bookshelf. This can create problems with books being too short, too easy, maybe wrong type of book, such as sports statistic books. I haven't had time to gather or organize books. I was wondering if I could assign Chapter books such as How to Eat Fried Worms, to everybody. Then, have them do extension activities from books like Differentiating Instruction with Menus: Language Arts. Does that go against the whole Daily Five concept?
Tammy It sounds like your issue is that students may finish a book and need a new one before the daily 5 round is up and this creates management problems for your reading workshop. I prefer not to assign whole class books because rarely do we have classes where one book is appropriate for every child based on their independent reading level and I'm sure ...See More
