I think that teachers have to get away from "my way is the right way" idea and at least be open to learning new teaching techniques. I do not believe whole class instruction and worksheets promote learning. Worksheets, especially in mathematics, only tells the teacher whether the child can computate or memorize math facts. I have learned that math is building on concepts and not just regurgitating a process. You have to be able to THINK and do especially with problem solving skills. As far as Fountas & Pinnell goes...I totally support its use. Having advanced children or children who are below grade level sit and listen to a whole group reading lesson is a waste of time. Advanced children already get the grade level material and the below grade level kids must have the gaps filled in for them. You cannot do that with worksheets. I agree with the person that mentioned the modeling. It takes a good 4-6 weeks to get it down for the kids especially if they have never been in classroom ...See More
