In singling out teacher quality as the essential lever in educational reform, TEP is uniquely focused on attracting and retaining master teachers. To do so, TEP uses a three-pronged strategy that it terms the 3 R’s: Rigorous Qualifications, Redefined Expectations, & Revolutionary Compensation. The non-profit WatchKnow.org project, with a mission to organize a huge collection of educational videos for kids to learn from, is about to start hiring again. We launched last October with funding through the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi by a retired Memphis area businessman. While we're pleased with our database of 15,000 videos-- collected, described, rated, and placed in over 3,000 categories--we want to greatly expand our resource.
We feel that, with a database several times its current size, WatchKnow will become the natural first choice of students, teachers, and parents to find the best educational videos on every subject taught in schools. This is plausible because (1) we very usefully categorize videos in a fine-grained way no one else does, (2) we hand- pick our videos for relevance and quality, (3) our videos are approved by teachers, and (4) entries are easy to add and edit collaboratively (it's a new kind of wiki, designed by a co-founder of Wikipedia).
So we intend to hire around 10 new contractors, to work part-time building and maintaining the WatchKnow database of video information. Our first hires will be four editors, who will in turn hire some assistants. Please help build our non-profit, educational, and glowingly- reviewed resource by passing this notice along to likely candidates. Job details follow.

=========================================
APPLICATION DEADLINE AND INSTRUCTIONS: Thursday, March 18, 2010; please try to get it in sooner than that, though. Please send a resume/CV and references to [email removed].)
JOB DESCRIPTION: editors will have three main duties. (1) Supervise the work of 3-4 part-time assistants, including hiring them, reporting their hours twice monthly, and reviewing and giving feedback on their work as necessary. (2) Edit the database in their assigned subjects, especially but not only rendering the Directory in their subjects more coherent (according to our general policies). This will include reviewing the state standards from MS and TN and ensuring that WatchKnow has at least one category matching to each part of them. (3) Regularly add new videos yourself.
The first task of editors will be to spend some time editing the category scheme so that we have categories matching up with all the state standards in the editor's areas. The second task of editors will be to hire assistants and get them started. The third task, which editors will do with their new assistants, will be to go back over all of the existing videos in their assigned areas and either "check" or "double-check" them (this involves supplying age data, editing titles and descriptions as necessary, etc.).
The four areas in which we intend to hire an editor are: 1. Language Arts and Literature (probably someone with a literature degree) 2. History and Social Studies (probably a history degree) 3. Math and Science (probably a math or science degree) 4. The other subjects (we'll want a generalist who can credibly, i.e., with evidence, claim some competence in as many of Languages, Arts, Computers, and other WatchKnow top- level subjects not covered by 1-3 above, as possible)
Editors will answer to Larry Sanger, Executive Director of the WatchKnow project.
JOB TYPE: contract; online; about 15 hours per week, paid twice per month; $30 per hour, paid per hours reported. As we are building a community, collaborative resource, the positions may be temporary. On the other hand, as we are an expanding enterprise, they may not be!
QUALIFICATIONS: (1) Subject matter expertise: bachelor's degree in one of the main areas of our four editorships, master's or doctorate preferred. Generally, we need to see evidence that you have the ability to make Relatively authoritative decisions about content issues. (2) Experience in the field of education: while we prefer that you have experience as a preK-12 teacher, librarian, or educational technologist, we are willing to consider those who have some other kinds of experience/training in the field of education. Some familiarity with state standards, generally speaking, is important. (3) Technical facility: you need to be at least a "power user" of computers; you need to be able to get up to speed on the system fast and explain it to others as necessary. (4) Excellent verbal ability: you should be an excellent writer and editor. You must be able to understand and internalize WatchKnow editorial rules and apply them. (5) Keyboarding: since this is a database management position, a good typing/data input speed is a strong plus.
