As part of this initiative, western teachers who are trained and experienced from a selected number of countries, called Licensed Teachers (LTs) are being hired to work in state schools across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE.
Licensed teachers receive top pay and benefits - about 30% higher pay than they get in nearby international schools - and work in state schools that are still developing resources and up to date systems.
The tax free salaries range from 162,000 AED for teachers with 2 years of post-qualification experience (which is GBP 27,000 / AUD 44,000/ NZD 57,000 ) to 234,000 AED for teachers with a masters degree and 12 years' experience (which is about GBP 40,000/ AUD 65,000 / NZD 84,000) and includes yearly flights for self and dependents, free furnished housing and an extra month's salary per year of service as an end of service bonus.
LTs work for and alongside locally employed Emiratis and other Gulf Nationals. There are between 4 and 8 LTs per school. One of the challenges of this programme is that because of the size and scale of the deployment - there are over 300 schools and 2000 LTs, teachers will not know exactly what school they will be teaching with until they arrive. This kind of programme requires much more flexiblity and adaptability than teaching at a state school in your home country or indeed, at an international school.
The requirements for this programme are:
Qualified teachers only with teacher training such as a Bachelors of Education, or Degree + PGCE/PGDE/HDE for primary or secondary age ranges. These jobs are not suitable for teachers with only a TEFL certificate.
2 years of post qualification experience teaching Primary (all/most subjects) or Secondary English by August 2011. This experience must be indicated on your CV. Because of the nature of the programme, all applicants must be native English speakers
Due to visa restrictions, applicants must be under 60 at the time the contract commences.
This programme is not suitable for teachers with unmarried partners because it is not legal to live together in the UAE.
