It's never too late to apply. They'll take applications year-round and if they're not hiring, they'll keep it on file until the spring hiring season.
But, at this time of year, you're more likely to get hired as a sub or teacher assistant. But this can help you "get you foot in the door" and set you up for a job next year.
If you're lucky, you may also be able to get a long-term sub position for someone who is on sick or maternity leave.
If you can get hired as a sub, you'll also have some solid experience to put on a resume. This can make you even more marketable.
For 15 years, I've played the public school game and I am just weary of the chase.
All we seem to do is test test test and get ready for the test.
Our classrooms are populated with "special needs" children that we are supposed to teach, but they come to us with almost no prerequisite skills, unrealistic IEPs, and a whole staff of enabling special ed teachers who, rather than providing support, provide even more reason for the students to do nothing and be rewarded for it.
Administrators seem to get weaker and weaker by the year and we often have little or no leadership.
I would love to be in a place where I can teach, not test, have high expectations once more and not see them shot down by IDEA..
No place is perfect. I know that. But I feel as though I have been walking uphill in deep sand.....
I am interested in making a career change from social services to education, however I am not sure if I will be able to without having to go back to school. I have my BS in Bio/ Minor in Chem and a MS in Psychology. Is there anything I can do or a post masters program I could take to go into education. I live in NJ. Any advice or suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
I'm currently making a career change as well. I have a BSBA and have been in sales for 18 years. I found out about a program called Career Switcher in VA. Its a crash course in getting certified as a teacher. You have to take several state tests but after 9 weeks of teacher related courses, you can get a provisional license. As long as you have a bachelors and fiver years of work experience you can do it. If I were you google Career Switcher for your state. Their should be some local universities there that offer the program. Good Luck......
TimThat would depend on what you can teach. Palm Beach County needs secondary teachers. Orlando has had some issues with budget, I don't think they will be doing much hiring. Tim

I'm a Canadian teacher who went to teacher's college in Buffalo New York. I have experience teaching grade 1 and kindergarten, and additionally occastional teaching in grades k-5. It is nearly impossible to get a permanent job in Ontario.
I am looking to move to the U.S. I have been looking everywhere to find schools in the MA area who are willing to sponsor me. Do you know of any? Or even any recruiters that I can contact. I know I need to take the state exams in order to be qualified to teach in MA or any other state; this an easy thing to do. I already have passed my state exams to teach in NY.
I have signed up for the VIF program, who only offer a limited amount of states to work in. If I get a job through them, I would start work in August 2009. I would rather get work now than wait, if it's possible.

I returned to Ontario and got on two school boards right away. I don't believe it is impossible to find work here. You have to be positive and go out there and promote yourself.

YOU -Are a teacher; preferably a science/biology 1st grade to middle school, but all teachers are welcome. -Love short nature films aimed at families -Can write a lesson plan to accompany the films [fill in the blank, test questions, etc. Don't worry about forms, formating or finding the facts, I can do all that, I just need another mind to write up professional sounding verbage.]
Please check out the link provided and watch the films! they are about 3-5 minutes each, ideal for short attention spans and unlike any others you have seen. This is 100% legit and I can pay you through paypal. I don't need any info from you except your name, email and credentials. Thank you for your time!
My husband and I were both full-time teachers until we started our own businesses. Now, we both enjoy the perks of being full-time entrepreneurs, and we've created a community for teachers who may want to do the same thing.

Instruction needs to be student based not program based.
Teachers need to meet and talk to share ideas, differentiate curriculum, modified pre and post assessments, supplement instruction CONSISTENTLY and FREELY.
Students need to be engaged and responsible for their learning.
Parents and teacher must must must communicate!
Teacher needs to provide students instruction on their instructional level not on the lesson in the book.
Homework needs to be worthwhile not just busy work.
Teachers must be aware that no two students are alike. A lot of work is required to meet all those needs.
All students should be challenged. There should be no child that does not have to work to receive straight A’s.
Visuals and Modifications for Special Education and ESL benefit all CHILDREN.
Our purpose is to set our students up for success.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on these educational philosophy issues, Diane.
I'm sure with your diverse and unique experiences with gifted, ELL, and special education that school districts will see you as a highly-qualified and valuable candidate.
