Our church is offering an after school tutoring program for 50 K-5 students. Presently we are able to provide one tutor per student. What reading program could our church purchase that is effective AND the tutors could learn quickly.

I'd recommend Project Read or Fundations (Wilson) for K-3 and Wilson Reading System for gr 4-5. What an opportunity to make a difference in children's lives.

I would love a copy. I have an interview for a literacy specialist position at the middle school level and I'm trying to gather as much knowledge as possible.
Does anyone use the Burst Reading Program by Wireless Generation? What do you think of it? I am required to use it with my K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders who score intensive in Dibels. I'm kind of frustrated with it, especially with my 3rd graders.

Hi Lori! We would love to help you with your frustrations. Maybe your groups simply need adjusting - particularly when you say you are only using it with Intensive students. We can certainly help you with that. The 3rd grade concern also brings to mind the possibility of sparse or missing data, especially if this were your first year of using DIBELS with those students. Please email us back with your name and school at "[email removed]
PODoes your district provide the DRA2 folders for tracking each student's progress? If so, the charts on the back cover of the folders will indicate what levels are appropriate for each grade.
I'm looking for suggestions on starting a guided reading library for our building. We know what books we would like but knowing how many books (kits) to buy is our dilemma. Are there any formulas out there or references for this?
Fountas and Pinnell materials are great. Try reading: Guided Reading, Leveled Books, K-8, or visiting their website. Leveled Books has ideas for how many books are needed. I also googled setting up a guided reading library and found some things from different school districts.
Hope this is helpful. IT is a huge project but well worth the effort.
There is also useful stuff at the Reading Lady site [link removed]).

What are your responsibilities as the reading specialist?
...See MoreI am considering becoming a reading specialist since I just received my reading teacher license. Before I go on further with this license (and pay more), could you answer any of these questions for me? I just want to know more about what I might be getting in to. Thanks so much!
What are your responsibilities as the reading specialist?
Do you spent more of your day working with students or staff?
What does your typical day look like?
What are your favorite assessments?
What does the district expect from you?
Did you develop your district’s reading program? If yes, please tell me about it. If not, who had the responsibility?
What would you consider a great resource for directing and supervising a reading program?
What are the strengths/weaknesses of your program?
When you first became a reading specialist, what were your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?
What advice would you give to a new reading specialist?
