Gilda, it's up to you to champion the cause! It's a fact that Orton Gillingham has a huge success rate. No, it's not fun, and students often complain that it's babyish. But, after they begin to see that they're reading, spelling and writing better they don't care whether it's babyish or not. I agree that if Orton was taught beginning in Kindergarten there would be fewer students in need of intervention services. I personally feel that your person in charge who says Orton is "not fun" and therefore, hates it, is doing your district a disservice. I retired last June after teaching reading for 35 years. I taught just about every new program that came along. I have to say that Orton-Gillingham was, by far, the most successful program out there. Please do what you can to implement it in your school district.
