I know it is early, but are you going to CAST this year? In Dallas this year. I heard that it is very hard to get accepted to present this year. They had a lot of interest and turned away a lot of presenters.

Hi! I am here to find out if majority of our teachers are into computer-based instructional materials? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of using such materials in teaching activity-based Science?
ADVANTAGES: 1. It provide greater opportunities to the students to participate in classroom activities. 2. Improve classroom teaching efficiency. 3. Make the lesson very attractive - e.g. virtual lab, simulated activities 4. Enhances learning in demonstrable ways. 5. Increases learning retention.
DISADVANTAGES: 1. Students to depend too much on computers, reading of good books sometimes were compromise. 2. Teachers may be overly dependent on computers. 3. Reduce direct interaction between students.
Advantages: 1. CB-Instructional Materials help both the students visualize some abstract concepts in Science, like some lessons in Genetics, the transcription and translation of DNA, Chemical bonding and Molecular Geometry. 2. Students enjoy playing some computer games;there are lessons that could possibly programmed into computer games which may motivate students to be interested in the lesson. 3. It would be less tiring and time consuming for the teachers to prepare for the lesson because they can already attached pictures, video demonstrations, and graphical representation to their presentation.
Disadvantages: 1. Students may depend much on the use of computer, and may be lazy in taking down notes, reading from books or even construct graphs. 2. Not all teachers are capable of using the computer.Teachers who would use the CB-Teaching just to be adept with the trend may not maximize its purpose.
Current trends in teaching dictate that teachers incorporate ICT in classroom teaching. Are you into this? What are the problems you have encountered in using ICT-based instructional materials?
Ict just replaces the work of old visual aids. It helps in adding visualization to student. my only concern, is, for you to create a good ict based IM, you need lots of time to edit and make it better. Secondly, software availabity to make ict based IM more interactive. Lastly, materials for presentztion, though theres a AVR , it is use as classroom, making it harder to find a good place in presenting and doing an ICT-based instruction.
I had a co teacher before , a special Ed teacher. I am into this because the type of students we have here needs a lot of attention when it comes to accommodations and behavioral problems/issues. Having another adult makes it easier to handle with. The problems I encountered with is the common planning time and the time spent for the preparation and the modification of the lesson plans and the role of each teacher inside the classroom.
Hi! I would like to find out what particular computer-based instructional materials are best for use to teach any particular Science lesson? Can you please cite an example?
Been offered a science "guru" position at a Florida elementary school, one where I would do a "hands on" activity with all classes (with teacher in tow) and act as advisor for all matters scientific in the school.
It's a newly created position, one that I would have a LOT of leeway and plenty of funding (title 1 school).

I am looking for some physical science kits to supplement my curriculum and give my students some hands on opportunities. I have looked all over. Where should I look for some quality kits?
P. KieferGo to the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). Buy a book called "String and Sticky Tape Experiments". It has a lot of activity at several different levels that can be done with low cost materials that are easily available. It will be one of the best investments you will make.
