This may seem an odd question, but I am considering helping with the shortage in our area for science teachers. But this would be a "post-retirement" thing after 30 years in an engineering job.

Have a physics degree and I taught physics and chemistry for a year right out of college, but bailed on it. I remember one of the most stressful aspects was the pressure, time and effort involved with having a new lesson prepared each day for every subject. However, back then we had the texbook, a chalkboard, and a mimeograph machine to produce handouts and exams.

So one big factor in my decision would be whether the materials are light-years better today. I assume there are all sorts of ready made lessons and materials to use with the presentation/lectures?

Muinteoir Schools still have texts, boards (although most are whiteboards), and mimio machines have given way to copiers.

Most texts come with a good deal of ready made materials of dubious quality. They may or may not align with your standards. In Texas for example, all science texts were adopted before the revision of the standards, so none of th...See More

Mr. S. Thanks very much for the replies. Believe me, just having PowerPoint and Word available would be a huge boost in productivity, especially for technical material, math and such. Save, edit, copy and reuse.

I understand it is a very tough job, even with the better students that usually makeup the more advanced classes. And the pay is peanuts...See More

Bill T 6 NC I feel compelled to echo what Muinteoir has said.

Education has morphed a great deal since the last time you tried it. Nuts...it has changed exponentially in the last 5-10 years. More importantly, the clientel has changed. Merely "delivering content" won't get it anymore. We're dealing with the"smart phone" generation, the one with a high...See More
