Moving from fifth to second this year. We are required to teach Math in small groups- using Investigations series. What do you use for your students math tools? How are they stored? What is inside your students math tools? All ideas and organization tips welcomed.

Hi. Second grade is really a lot of fun to teach - as the lightbulb comes on for the students in most curriculum areas. Math has become very creative for me with the implementation of the CCSS. Our school also has the Investigations math curriculum but no longer purchases the workbooks. So, with that being said I supplement just about all that I do with workbooks that are driven by the CCSS. I Xerox work pages for the students from Investigations and many other sources. We practice with manipulatives. We have math talks and discuss how we arrive at answers to word problems. We play games that promote the automaticity of math facts. And we keep a Math Journal. Check out the books written about Singapore Math. Hang in there!
This is from the Education Northwest website: 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Instruction & Assessment
The 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Instruction & Assessment provides a common language for teachers and students to communicate about the characteristics of writing and establishes a clear vision of what good writing looks like.
Pioneered by Education Northwest more than 20 years ago, the 6+1 Traits continue to help thousands of teachers worldwide who have been trained in the model improve their writing instruction, their understanding of the qualities of good writing, and their ability to provide effective feedback to students
They have some more information about it linked in the page, but I'm sure other teachers here can give you a more personal review of the program and its results.
There is also a 6 Traits Writing Chatboard and Mailring on this website. You could ask on that chatboard and join that mailring to get a better idea what teachers using it think.
Here is a project I did in the late spring with the littleones. I have been using lego sets from pleygo.com to get the kids to work in groups on lego creations. Its great, the kids loved it!
I have been using lego creator series...easy to build and the kids can play with their creation after.
My suggestion is to work out a different signal for the children who have doctor notes and make the others stick with your 'during work time' policy. Perhaps the children with doctor notes can quietly excuse themselves, checking out on a board in the classroom so you know where they are, and leave without disrupting the rest of the class.

> I am starting small groups on Monday. What do I do? I have already gotten the books. What kind of questions do I ask? Since I only have a 60 minute small group block, i will have to meet with each group for 20 minutes. My low group (the Red), as I mentioned will have 9 kids. I don't think I have ever had that many kids in one group. What should I have the other groups doing while I meet with my small groups? Are there any instant ready made signs or activities or will I have to go to the teachers store? Any websites where I can print any cards or anything? Please help! > > > Julie
SherylJulie, If you go to teachersnotebook.com or teacherspayteachers.com or to pinterest.com you will find lots of ideas ready to print. There are one you have to pay for but many, many that are free!! Enjoy 2nd grade!!
