Can anyone answer this questions for me? Is the word "car" an open or closed syllable word? Or is it either one? I think, from my reading, that open or closed have to do with the short or long vowels.

Another question, if "ou" says "ow" like in cow, or "o" like in grow, is that a digraph or dipthong? Which category would "thorough" fit? Thanks for any help or direction to a site that explains this well.
Judy2/CA An open syllable ends with a vowel sound which is usually the long vowel sound. A closed sound ends in a consonant and is usually a short vowel sound.

paula there are six different types of syllables.

open/closed either end with vowel (open and usually long vowel sound) consonant (closed short vowel sound)

car is an r controlled vowel, and I don't think falls into either category.
