Take Home Reading

Would anyone be willing to share how your take home reading program works? We are interested in improving ours and are looking for any and all ideas. We use leveled books, but so many of them are too much to read in one night, so ideas for record keeping would be helpful. How do you organize them, and how often do the kids select new books to take home. Daily? Weekly? Do you send chapter books home?

Judy2/CA I have 36 kids in my reading block - split into 2. They are the "lowest" readers(I hate that word!) readers in my grade level. My kids each have a plastic bag(gallon freezer size) that they keep their books in. I have a zillion books - Rigby books, blacklines from first grade and previous reading series, etc. We change books whenever we have time -...See More

1. I have never had 36 kids (the most in 36 years was 33), regardless of the number it is near impossible to montiter every child, so set up a system that depends on the parents to help their child out at home. 2. Ziploc bags are a must, they are cheap, yet protect the books from accidently falling out of the backpack, then they don't get wet. 3. Send home like on a Monday (I liked Friday.) Then, manage on a needed basis or once a week. 4. Old previous reading series, blacklines from first grade are great, but if you don't feel you have enough books, then purchase a membership in Reading A-Z. 5. Leveled readers from our library were a big help. Students could check out two books -- one of the leveled readers, then their choice for the second book. 6. I didn't let my own personal books go home. Some parents didn't like my policy, but I didn't bend. 7. For those ready for chapter books, then one chapter a night is reasonable. 8. The school providing small prizes for reading logs from home is a big help. (My grandson's school does that and he is only in Kindergarten. He loves it. The Kindergarten teacher doesn't give small prizes, but she does give out BEST Tickets. They can be used for anything. Don't know what happens when you get some many, may be nothing. My grandson is collecting his in a special jar at home. He is proud and his parents can reinforce that great feeling at home.) 9. We loved our AR tests as one way of accessing students reading at their level. 10. If you do need some sort of analysis after a child read a book, then use the assessments provided by Reading A to Z. 11. On Mrs. Winston's site she has fiction and nonfiction. We didn't use the same reading series, but lucky Scholastic sells a lot of them cheaply in their books clubs. Also, our school library had some of the chapter book series. We used our grant funds to buy those NF readers, many from Scholastic, too.
