I have taught K for the past 7 yrs and have the opportunity to switch grades from K to 2nd. I am looking for a little more of a challenge academically speaking and less centers/calendar/singing etc.....

Have any of you jumped from K to 2nd before? Could you provide any insight/advice on what I will encounter? Any helpful tips/things that really work for you at that grade level?

Thanks ahead of time for your responses. I hope this 2nd grade chatboard is as helpful as I have found the K chatboard to be over the years.

Leanne/CA 2nd grade is great! In my district, 2nd grade is also the first year for state testing so we have to spend a lot of time on test-taking skills to the detriment of doing social studies, science, art, etc. I try to work it in as nonfiction reading, though.

Diana Second grade is wonderful. The children are more independent and have longer attention spans. They are developing a sense of humor and beginning to make inferences and take another's point of view. The literature and other curriculum that you present can be more complex and interesting. Still, the children still love their teacher, and love school....See More

shirley collins I moved up from K to 2nd grade this year. I had a hard time adjusting at first only I had to remember that 2nd grade takes alot of written grades as before in Kindergarten I did alot of oral/and hands on assessments. I am loving the fact that the kids can do more and it it alot of fun!!!

Charliethecow I'm in the same boat, but not of my own choice. I'm very sad about it.
