I just ordered a Pocket PC and I was wondering if anyone else uses one to write lesson plans, keep data...or other ways to use it in the classroom. It is for me to use, not the students.
Donna, I've been thinking of doing the same, I also always thought it would be sooo much easier to make observations and notes throughout the day. Did you need a particular program? What kind of pocket PC do you use? Is it a palm pilot? Any info would be helpful! I'd love to find a class over the topic too.

I am a tech teacher in a K-8 Catholic school. Any ideas of different kinds of Internet filters that work well and are cheap or free. I use cybersitter and I am looking at other options. Thanks for any help!!
Hi I work in a preschool classroom and I'm a new teacher. I've been getting observed by my evaluater. She said she really does not like computers and believes children should be learning in other areas in the classroom. If I do use educational software which one? I have a same or different game, clifford phonics, blues clues, and others.
I am a computer teacher so I do value computers but I do have concerns about their value in a PreK setting.
I would set the computer station up so that you always have at least two students there at a time. Then at least they have to cooperate when they are on the computer.
Kid Pix is good for a wide range of ages and you can create your own activities for Kid Pix that would go along with your curriculum.
Do you have the students for a half-day or a full-day? If you only have them for a half-day, then I would try to use the computer only as a group.

I want to start using Podcast in my classroom this fall. However, no one in my school has used it, yet. So, I haven’t been able to observe it actually being used with students. If you’ve used it in your classroom would you please let me know how your students responded to it? I am really wondering how well it works with elementary students. Thanks!!!
Hi. My school is looking for new software for K-1. I am on the committee to find this new software, but do not know where to look. Does anyone use a good program? Would you mind telling me a little about it so I can look for further details? Thanks!

If you're looking for a huge program, try Successmaker Enterprise by Pearson. The whole thing includes 19 programs K-8, with the main ones being Initial Reading, Reader's Workshop, and Math Concepts and Skills. We've had it couple of years. Your teachers will need a day of training to familiarize them with all the options. It will track progress, print several kinds of reports--parent reports, cumulative progress, grouping by difficulty, projection, etc. You can set it to work on specific strands, so some customizing especially in the core programs is possible. The 19 also include : Discover English (K-2), Reading Readiness, Writing (4-5), Science (5), Reading Adventures, and a number of others. About 40,000 for 60 computers, must be online.
Lexia Learning ([link removed].
Free: Starfall.com must be onine. Excellent program, very dependable, and kids PK-1 love it.
tickettoread.com from Voyager Expanded Learning/Pearson. I'm not sure about first grade, but it is available for 2nd and 3rd. Just came out last year, and I was mega impressed with the way it presented concepts and worked on comprehension skills. Don't know if you have to already have other Voyager products to get it. We used the trial for a couple of months at the end of last year and were very impressed. We've asked for it, money is tight so it may not happen for us.
Others I've heard of, but didn't much care for what I saw when I investigated them. These are more for TAKS prep, so not so much for first grade: Study Island, Sleek, A+
Hope this helps some. When I was on a similar committe, I would go to the web sites of recognized schools and see what they were using for technology. Sometimes I called their tech people or emailed them to ask about their tech/software programs. They were usually really helpful in telling me what they would recommend. If you contact the Instructional Technology person (their contact info is usually on the district site), they will usually give you a lot of information.
I am using Google Earth as a way to teach students world geography. I have traditional maps that cover certain time periods such as Medieval Europe, the Fall of Rome, etc. Is there a way to use Google Earth to teach these time periods? Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have a touch screen system which works well for my youngest students, and I'd like to install some older educational software on it, but when I go to setup.exe, it's not recognized as a win32 application. This system was a point of sale terminal in a former life, and does not have a built in CD-Rom drive recognized in CMOS, so I can't easily upgrade the OS. Does anyone have any suggestions in how to get these programs recognized?
I am looking for educational software for the 4-8 grades for our learning center and library. We can't afford Plato or Orchard Learning. Does anyone know of any other software that has sound teaching practices and research, but affordable?
