As a student once my self I have explored (and avoided) many firewalls.
Your protection is limited only by the amount of effort you put in and the creativity of your students. There are 3 types of "firewalls" out there:
1) Software on users computer. This is cheap, easy to install, and as long as the student isnt tech savy, fairly effective. Mainly for home computers.
2) Proxy server: More expensive, better protection, harder to setup, and requires the student to know a bit more about internet and its inner workings to get around it. Small business applications.
3) DNS server with a contnet blocking Firewall: Very expensive, much better protection IF done correctly, easier setup than proxy, and requires the student to be a genuine hacker to break it. If you student can avoid it you have one of two things. A) It wasnt setup correctly B) You have a brilliant student that should be helped along and pursuaded to the "white hat" areana of hacking and teach why he should avoid being a "black hat". Full on Enterprise Business Security.
So below are some good choices: CYBERsitter - software good one at that. The proxy ones need to be used on a trial before you buy it. The DNS ones (appliances) search iprism stbernard on google
So, its all up to your price range.
Enjoy dontbflat (search me on google, thanks comments are appriciated)
What is the difference between the Academic version and Professional version of Microsoft Office? Will items created in the Academic version open in Professional? Thanks.
The difference between the Academic version and the Professional version is which software is included. The Academic version includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook. The Professional version includes everything in the Academic version plus Publisher and Access. You won't have any problems opening items from the different versions.

Thanks, my husband decided to go with the Prof. since he found the Academic version does not include updates.

I have inherited an old computer that has the program Kid Desk on it. Kid Desk was made many years ago by Edmark and is a launcher program. I used it in a lab many years ago and remember it as a very neat little program. However, what I don't remember is the keyboard commands to get into the teacher controls! So although it is on this computer, I can't disable it or add things to it without those keyboard commands. .... and of course my "inherited" computer came with no manuals. Is anyone familiar with this program so you can tell me how to access the teacher area?
I have an old Power Mac 5500 that runs everything but MS Word. I'm trying to use Word 4. from a Mac disc I had but I get this message. The application "unknown" has unexpectedly quit because an error of type 3 occurred". What does this mean? If this disc won't work is there anyway I can buy a version of MSWord that would run on this computer? Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me solve this problem.
I am currently studying for a degree in teaching and have an assignment in which I need to track down/design a template for evaluating educational software.
I am having all sorts of trouble locating such templates and so far have found just one suitable template, from UCLA.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find a few more examples of such checklists/templates please?
I ended up using Kathy Schrock's (and a few other) evaluation forms as the basis for my own. Do a search for "Kathy Schrock". Good luck with the assignment!
instead of having you and all your classmates reinvent the wheel. I've never met one single teacher who used a software evaluation checklist, let alone wasted time designing one.
Sympathy to you. Good luck with the wild goose chase and all the other busywork that lies ahead.

We teach English here in Germany and like many other schools have found the administration of classes completed remotely a real time consuming activity. Answering many questions regarding attendance, how many lessons are left in a course, did Mr Jones attend ... and so on, but not only this. We also have to make sure teachers complete documentation such as attendance lists, training records and reports and all this documentation needs to be collected, organised and sent to the customer each month. If you are involved in teaching in companies, you may know what I mean.
For the above reason, I have developed a software program that runs on any internet server (which most schools have for their homepages). The software automates all this administration. The customer benefits greatly because they can get all the information they need instantly. The teacher benefits because they have to spend much much less time sending the information to the school, and, the school benefits because their own administration is reduced to only 10% of that they currently need to perform.
The system is now running with us and the feedback I have had from Customers and Teachers has been very very positive. It has greatly reduced our administration time so much. An idea I had over a year ago and that I finally put into action.
So why am I telling you this? Well I would like to offer other schools the chance to use the system. I know many might say "we don't need one, we have no administration problem" Nevertheless, I think an increase in profits, teacher service and customer service would be interesting to all.
So if you are a school, or a teacher working for a school, are fed up with administration, fed us of hours of documentation, or want to improve your profits and give your customer a better service, just contact me directly and privately on my emails below..
It will cost you nohting to contact me and to see the system and there is no obligation. robert@hamburg- english.de or [email removed].
We have another piece of software that you may be interested in using, but I will put this under a separate heading to maintain forum integrity.
One of my past activities was to introduce a way to improve the quality and cost effectiveness of training in a company. We found that many companies have a limitation on time for English lessons and that outside class hours, our students could not really continue their exposure to the language. We wanted to gice our customers more value for money and also help companies by allowing a way for employees to continue their education in their own time. Only natural, because in many cases the company pays for courses for their employees.
For all the above reasons, I developed an online training website for English. The address is [link removed].
We now use this system and have found that it has enhanced the training we offer customers. Employees can now continue their training between lessons, which many do. The site is fully automated and in fact we use it for many things, which have been built into it over the years.
Automatic placement testing, now we can test employees for placement into classes, we dont even have to score the test, the placement and scoring is done by the system. We offer this same testing system for instant job applicant reporting. Imagine! a job applicant sits a test and by the time they walk to the HR office for the interview, a report on their language skills is in the hands of the HR manager!
IT can help English schools enhance profits, enhance service and improve conditions for trainers.
Anyway, have a great time all teachers and schools. If anything I have said is of interest to your school, drop me a line at [email removed].
Maybe you have an idea and would like to develop it. I am always interested, just contact me.
I have found that my students have really enjoyed my desktop visuals. For a few years now I have installed screensavers on my classroom computer in regards to different lessons that we have during the year. These screensavers have not only kept my children's interest in the lessons but have also have added decoration to my classroom through all the seasons.
