Looking for Language Arts Software for K-1

face on the Microsoft Office programs. I do use it with my
first graders.

The other suite of programs that I use are the House series
by Edmark. There is a "language arts" title called "Bailey's
Book House."

J.K. I have not used it personally but many people talk about the software Kidspiration and Inspiration. I know that it works very well in the lower grades as well as upper elementary.

If you're looking for a huge program, try Successmaker Enterprise by Pearson. The whole thing includes 19 programs K-8, with the main ones being Initial Reading, Reader's Workshop, and Math Concepts and Skills. We've had it couple of years. Your teachers will need a day of training to familiarize them with all the options. It will track progress, print several kinds of reports--parent reports, cumulative progress, grouping by difficulty, projection, etc. You can set it to work on specific strands, so some customizing especially in the core programs is possible. The 19 also include : Discover English (K-2), Reading Readiness, Writing (4-5), Science (5), Reading Adventures, and a number of others. About 40,000 for 60 computers, must be online.

Free: Starfall.com must be onine. Excellent program, very dependable, and kids PK-1 love it.

tickettoread.com from Voyager Expanded Learning/Pearson. I'm not sure about first grade, but it is available for 2nd and 3rd. Just came out last year, and I was mega impressed with the way it presented concepts and worked on comprehension skills. Don't know if you have to already have other Voyager products to get it. We used the trial for a couple of months at the end of last year and were very impressed. We've asked for it, money is tight so it may not happen for us.

Others I've heard of, but didn't much care for what I saw when I investigated them. These are more for TAKS prep, so not so much for first grade: Study Island, Sleek, A+

Hope this helps some. When I was on a similar committe, I would go to the web sites of recognized schools and see what they were using for technology. Sometimes I called their tech people or emailed them to ask about their tech/software programs. They were usually really helpful in telling me what they would recommend. If you contact the Instructional Technology person (their contact info is usually on the district site), they will usually give you a lot of information.
