I am looking for ideas about keeping kids in the target language. I have been teaching 12 years and I have a lot of old ideas that I am tiring of so I am looking for some new ideas. Please share if you have something that works for you!

A) Last night I had to write an essay for Spanish class. – Anoche tenía que escribir un ensayo para la clase de español. (By using the imperfect here, you are implying that it was merely your responsibility, but perhaps you never wrote it.)No indication of being acted upon. Just informational.
B)Last night I had to write an essay for Spanish class. – This time, you want to indicate that it was your responsibility, AND you actually did it. – Anoche tuve que escribir un ensayo para la clase de español.
Using that way of thinking has made it much easier for my students to choose between the two tenses of all those special verbs that have different meanings in the past. I hope this helps! Marie

Perfection Learning, formerly published by Amsco Publications, just put out a brand new edition of Spanish is Fun, Book A and B. I've not seen it yet, but the sales rep stated it's really up to date. Perhaps yours would send you a sample copy.
