I would like some ideas regarding the best way to test reading comprehension in high school L1 and L2 Spanish classes. We are using the Realidades series.

Some colleagues would like the questions posed in Spanish and require the answer in Spanish.

Others want the questions in English and the answers in English. The rational is that students who provide the answer in English are understanding the passage and not just copying the answers. Furthermore, we are testing the passage, not the ability to comprehend the question.

We all agree that we would like the exercises be challenging enough for the students and at the same time easy for us to grade.

Another issue is that our district would like us to use its assessment generator. At first glance, the generator seems limited to traditional multiple choice, matching and true/false questions. We don't want to create an assessment this year just to have the district impose the use of the generator next year....See More
