A student wrote, "Empieza conservar tu dinero." I feel like there should be an "a" before conservar but I can't explain why. Can anyone help? Actually, I'm not even sure Empieza a conservar tu dinero would be right. Seems like you would just say "Ahorra tu dinero" or something like that.
SRA FAL Empezar takes an A before any infinitive.. ahorra is much better here...

Sra.M Empezar (or any verb to express a beginning) needs an A before an infinitive. And yes, ahorrar is better. Conservar is To Conserve and it just sounds too "environmental" when used in your students context. :)

ahorrar Conservar is actually "to conserve". Saving money is ahorrar. And you say empezar a with an infinitive. Hoy empiezo a ahorrar mi dinero.
