When I studied in Costa Rica, a Costa Rican told me not to say "estoy llena" for I'm full, to use estoy satisfecha instead. I saw that someone on teacherspayteachers used estoy lleno/a on a worksheet. Can you use both or is the estoy satisfecho/a the only correct one to use? Thank you.

Exactly: <<told me not to say>> it.

"estoy lleno" is more ambiguous than 'I am full', with some unwanted aceptaciones. In many places it is perfectly acceptable in place of "estoy satisfecho," but it is probably also regarded as coarse in some groups and other places. More concretely:

A minor issue first: "lleno" can be a euphemism for 'overweight' -- as in "full-figured" -- so you have to be careful how you use it.

"estoy lleno" can mean full of food *or drink*, and which of these is the more likely interpretation varies with context.

[In German it goes perhaps further: "ich bin voll" can be understood as full *of alcohol*...]

[The sense is widespread that it is crass to describe oneself as filled to capacity. In German, or at least in polite German, it is coarse to say "ich bin voll" ('I am full') even if it's clear that you're not drunk, and one should say "ich bin satt" ('estoy satisfecho').]

I guess the following is much better known, but it bears emphasizing: another adjective be careful of is "caliente." "Estoy caliente" is most likely to be understood as 'I am hot,' with hot meaning, umm, let's just say sexually aroused. It may also mean 'I am angry, furious' ("es caliente" thus 'is hot-headed') but I think that's more regional and occasional. In any case, it's useful to make sure students know a safe alternative like "hace calor."

[Likewise in German "ich bin heiß" means either 'estoy caliente' or 'I am sexy' (~'soy caliente' -- German has no soy/estoy distinction). Instead one should use something like "mir ist heiß."]

English is not free of these things either. A cold or frigid person is not necessarily any degree of hypothermic.

Daniel Hanson Too literal of a translation. You can say things like: <I>No puedo más</I> or <I>Estoy que reviento</I>.

Daniel Hanson "Satisfecho" is used, but it doesn't mean that you're super full though. It is a more formal way of saying it. "Lleno" is obviously colloquial or informal. I am not familiar with Costa Rican culture and usage.

maestra2012 I think it depends on who you are with ...to say "im full " is informal in my opinion so therefore estoy lleno would be okay.
