We are "not allowed" to teach spelling, only word study, but I have yet to truly understand what this is and how to do it in the short time frame we are given in our literacy block. I teach Grade 4. I have used Sitton Spelling and, while I think it is great, it takes a long time to do it. I have 15 minutes, 3 times a week, to make a significant impact on my students' spelling and understanding of word structure, as well as grammar and vocabulary! Ack!

Bev-MI Lisa, I have Making Words (Gr4) and Making Big Words by P. Cunningham. The students use letter tiles, plastic letters, or provided letter strips to cut apart.I also have books on analogies, word endings, Prefixes, suffixes, and Syllabication. Excellent condition. Just retired and will give you a good deal. Please e- mail.

Krista Mark - what do you have on 1st grade differentiation? I'm experiencing difficulty in finding what works best for my kiddos while using the Dolch list as our spelling words. Argh..

Thanks

Mark Pennington Krista,

Great question. Let me first get you thinking a bit on your spelling source (the Dolch words) and then directly answer your (and, no doubt, others') question. Teachers often confuse these components of learning how to use our language: decoding (reading according to the patterns of English, i.e., phonics), sight words (irregular, ...See More
