Dealing with Learned Helplessness by Barbara Blackburn and Dr. Bradley Witzel
Learned helplessness is a process of conditioning where student seek help from others even when they have mastered information. Are your practices inadvertently fostering helplessness in students? What can teachers do to teach independence instead of helplessness?

"The Moberly School District is a small rural district in Missouri with 2000 students, divided among seven district buildings, each headed by its own principal. Yet what they do to help new teachers exceeds what larger school districts neglect to do..." Harry & Rosemary Wong in their March "Effective Teaching" column
I want to take the Praxis II to test into additional certifi cation, preferably science or math. Should I take a few clas ses to prepare for the test, or should I learn at my own pac e using study guides and textbooks? How much prep do I proba bly need? I like science, but I majored in English / Seconda ry Education.
Science teachers, in...See MoreOn the Praxis II exam for math (10061) you will find questions on Linear Algebra and The Calculus. Be prepared for these. I personally wouldn't mind if they made the Praxis 2 exams harder to pass for math certification. IMHO there are too many people teaching math who weren't math majors and don't know math themselves.
Science teachers, in my book, know their stuff.
Any H.S. AP chem teacher teachers College freshman level Chem on a daily basis. Most of the math teachers I come accross feel as though Calc 1 and II are high adventure. IT shouldn't be. Calc 1 and two were freshman courses when I was a math major. Calc III and IV (a.k.a. Real Analysis) were taken in sophmore and senior year, respectively.
At a magnet school near me, Calc III and Diffy-Qs are taught.

I happen to "like" watching surgery performed. As a graduate student in Medical Biology, preparing me for a career as a cardiac pefusionist, I watched many videos of surgeries performed, and "liked" it. Eventually, I went into teaching bio, when I realized that running a heart/lung machine wasn't for me.
At the risk of tooting my own horn, I feel better qualified than someone qualifying for a science teaching job by cramming for a certification exam.
Your expertise is in English, and I respect you for that. But don't be surprised if you get resented by career changing teachers with solid science backgrounds someday, if you find yourself a science teacher.

All of those intriguing questions and many more will be answered during March in Jim Wayne's very popular Writing Prompts! The first installment for March is now online!
Here's a sample from the writing prompts for Feb. 28:
Most of the people of Curiepe, Venezuela, make their living fishing for sardines. Every year on this day, they have a funeral for the sardines they have caught during the previous year. The funeral serves to remind them of the need to protect the sardines from overfishing and pollution. Describe another ceremony or celebration that would help to remind people of the need to take care of the natural world.
The first full moon of the year is called the Wolf Moon because in earlier times, wolves would become desperate for food during this time of year and attack cattle and other domestic animals. (Wolves almost never attack people; apparently we taste bad to them.) Modern people almost never see wolves, so Wolf Moon is not a very useful name for us. What name would you give for the full moon in January that might be meaningful to today’s people? Why that name?
