Be a Group Leader in 2012 to Panama, China or Turkey
AFS-USA offers short community service programs for students in grades 8-12. The design of this 10-14 day program is that students have a cultural arrival orientation and overnight in the primary city, after which they travel to their local community for a project and homestay.
Students have cultural enrichment activities in the afternoon and evenings. The trip ends with a short sightseeing experience just prior to returning home.
This program is designed for educators and youth leaders to recruit and chaperon groups of 8-15 students who will be placed in the same community working in the morning on projects such as improving conditions in local primary schools and refurbishing homes for families with special needs.

I am hoping to take about 10 students abroad to Guatemala with a colleague who knows a lot about the area we hope to visit. Does anyone have any recommendations/guidelines/requirement/thoughts for taking 13-15 year old students abroad?
Have you thought about taking your students to Puerto Rico -- La Isla del Encanto? I am a retired teacher who has taken students on many trips throughout Europe, Central and North America over my 40+ years of teaching. Puerto Rico IS enchanting, and by far the most popular. No worries about passports, money exchanges, phone calls, etc. It is a VERY easy trip to set-up and take, especially with the age group you mention. Check out the preptours.com website for more information. Email me if you would like to chat about Puerto Rico.

The list goes on and on. But keep in mind. Whether you're a teacher looking to improve or enhance what you're teaching or a parent looking to lead a parent organized trip, these are valuable questions to ask and know. Some of these questions are obvious, but others such as "how many employees" or "do they offer support" are important. Here's why. If your student/son/child/or even you are going on a trip, wouldn't you like to know that someone will always answer the phone? Or better yet, will respond quickly? Even though the company may have 1000 employees, it doesn't mean you are getting the best service, but size does matter when planning a trip. You want to make sure that your student travel representative is attentive and always available when you call or email.
You would be surprised as to what some "Student Travel" tour operators motives are. In some cases, MONEY! Find out what their policy says. You don't want to choose a company because its a household brand name or "is the largest company". Sometimes their policies are VERY strict and for obvious reasons. Make sure you weigh all options before making a decision.
Moving on to what drove you here! Top destinations! How do you choose where to go? How do you convince parents, administrators and students to pay up? Here are some match-ups you'll love!
Science ---------- Hawaii Orlando, FL San Diego, CA Los Angeles, CA San Francisco, CA Grand Canyon, AZ Niagara Falls, NY / CAN New York
History (Social Studies) ----------- Washington, DC Boston, MA New York Philadelphia, PA Virginia California
Performing Arts (Choirs, Bands, Drama) ------------ New York Chicago, IL Orlando, FL San Francisco, CA Washington DC New Orleans, LA Nashville, TN
Why are these top destinations? Every year we run an analysis on each destination. We try to find out which is improving based on venues that are suitable for students. These destinations are constantly innovating and we're connected to make sure the world knows about them. Just because you don't see a desired destination, it doesn't mean it's on the list! Ask us who else is on this list.
To find out more about these destinations, I will be more than happy to send you a no-obligation destination itinerary. Just put "Teachers.net" in the subject line.

"My na...See MoreExcellent advice from On Trek. Would that Mariden USA pay attention to the needs of its customers...
Lest reviewers think Shrewsbury High School was the only victim of Mariden USA's unscrupulous business practices, I received this correspondence today from Maud Birney, a French teacher who works in Cecil County, Maryland.
"My name is Maud Birney. I teach French in a small high school in Cecil County Maryland. I am emailing regarding the comments you made in diverse web venues regarding Mariden USA.
I am also a very dissatisfied and heart broken costumer of Mariden Usa. We were supposed to leave on June 27 and they announced me today that they were not able to secure airplane seats for our group on this date...
Two weeks before the trip, they are moving the dates of the trip and offering us a similar trip on July 11. Some of the parents cannot travel during these dates and we have been offered callously a voucher for next year trip.
You seemed on your blog as irate as I am right now and I was hoping you could give me some advice on how to go about this situation."
Again, I urge extreme caution when considering travel with Mariden USA.
