Be a Group Leader in 2012 to Panama, China or Turkey
AFS-USA offers short community service programs for students in grades 8-12. The design of this 10-14 day program is that students have a cultural arrival orientation and overnight in the primary city, after which they travel to their local community for a project and homestay.
Students have cultural enrichment activities in the afternoon and evenings. The trip ends with a short sightseeing experience just prior to returning home.
This program is designed for educators and youth leaders to recruit and chaperon groups of 8-15 students who will be placed in the same community working in the morning on projects such as improving conditions in local primary schools and refurbishing homes for families with special needs.

I am hoping to take about 10 students abroad to Guatemala with a colleague who knows a lot about the area we hope to visit. Does anyone have any recommendations/guidelines/requirement/thoughts for taking 13-15 year old students abroad?

Before choosing a destination, there are many factors that come into play when deciding on doing a field trip or educational tour. Yes, there are tons of companies out there, but what do you need to consider before choosing? Here are a few *unbiased* pointers: - How long have they been in business? - Do they have or are they insured? - What type of travel do they offer? Student? Adult? - Are they an exclusive student travel company? - How many employees? - What are their refund policies? - What is said on internet (reviews)? - What is their goal or vision (money or education)? - What destinations do they offer? - Do they offer 24 hr, online or phone support? - Do they provide "pre-trip" support? - What's included in the each trip? - Do they have references?
The list goes on and on. But keep in mind. Whether you're a teacher looking to improve or enhance what you're teaching or a parent looking to lead a parent organized trip, these are valuable questions to ask and know. Some of these questions are obvious, but others such as "how many employees" or "do they offer support" are important. Here's why. If your student/son/child/or even you are going on a trip, wouldn't you like to know that someone will always answer the phone? Or better yet, will respond quickly? Even though the company may have 1000 employees, it doesn't mean you are getting the best service, but size does matter when planning a trip. You want to make sure that your student travel representative is attentive and always available when you call or email.
You would be surprised as to what some "Student Travel" tour operators motives are. In some cases, MONEY! Find out what their policy says. You don't want to choose a company because its a household brand name or "is the largest company". Sometimes their policies are VERY strict and for obvious reasons. Make sure you weigh all options before making a decision.
