Last Straw

Had several horrible experiences at one school in our district. Usually I let things roll (been subbing for 10 years) but reached a point yesterday after subbing in 5K classroom that I have taken that school off my list. There were four main issues. 1) Sub plans were OVER-DETAILED. TWELVE pages...seriously?!

2). The classroom teacher had STRICT bathroom policies. When I talked with her about how many of her students were standing in line squirming around and clutching their pants saying they "really had to go" (After they had SEVERAL bathroom breaks and had used up their "allotted" three sticks per day ......I was told "They are pulling your leg" (her plans said "Once they use up their sticks they are not allowed any extra breaks (they did have ONE group bathroom break after lunch). So what happened after I tried to crack down on the bathroom issues? Two of the boys wet their pants!

12 pages is A LOT! I was in middle school, so my most detailed plans (one year with a horrid bunch of kid in two classes) were three pages. That being said, bring a highlighter and quickly scan the plans, highlighting the important stuff. I am lucky that I only sub in my old school, so plans are usually only two or three sentences per class period. It helps already knowing procedures that are schoolwide schoolwide already. I do know that when teachers prep for unknown subs, th unknown subs, they are much more detailed.

Kindies need more potty breaks. Forget the stupid sticks and let them go when they need. We have a hall pass policy, but sometimes you just have to let even middle schoolers go to the bathroom when the the bathroom when their passes are gone. > > 3). Remember the highlighter trick. You can also underline or circle proce circle procedures that are important to keeping the classroom running smoo running smoothly. For individual teachers, I underline any differentiat differentiations for students or classroom procedures. > > 4). Ignore it. Middle school students say similar stuff. I us usually just calmly respond with "That's nice." or some other be benign statement.

More power to you for teaching the littles. I have two 5 year old grandchildren and THEY can wear me out. I can't imagine corralling 20+ littles like that. Petlover67 I usually do (and did) use a highlighter (it was the first thing I grabbed when I saw those plans) however....there was SO MUCH that their teacher deemed important it was hard to pick and chose, lol.

Teachers have to deal with the same personalities day in and day out, and they have to be progressive, especially in this test-heavy school environment.

Children who need to go to the bathroom more than twice in a school day either have a medical problem, or they are overly stressed or emotional (I know, I am not a doctor, but they say this too). It may be necessary to provide time out occasions, either a dance video, or reading time,either you reading or them, or a soft music with low music episode. Maybe you could space out the bathroom times, and have it in the schedule to do this. Then the 3+ a day kids will see in the schedule when they can go, or they get permission to calm themselves down.

About the "she said" incident, I have been able to look at the child in her face and say " I KNOW I am not ugly (or whatever), so if anyone says that, I can just ignore them. Whether or not you said it, if you ever hear someone say that, you can do the same thing, can't you?" This way, you bot defuse the insult, and give them a bit of emotional ammunition if someone says that to them (which is usually the point).

I let students use the bathroom, unless I sensed they were taking advantage. I picked and chose what I covered in the plans. I honestly didn't care at that point if she banned me because the class was so horrible, and I decided that very day that I would never set foot in this school again.
