Hi, I am a primary school teacher and would like to use the summer holidays to travel abroad. However, i have not done a lot of travelling and would like to be recommended a destination or travel company that has been successful and safe! Please email me any ideas or a starting point. Thank you Lucy
A lot of voluntreer travel programs are very expensive, others are "pet the orphan" type programs that do little real good in the community.
If you are considering a volunteer stint of 3 weeks or more (the bare minimum to really have any lasting impact on a community) and know a little Spanish, I would be happy to talk to you about our programs in Peru. We are also starting to work with an organization called Adventure Aid, which operates in Tanzania if a trip to Africa interests you.
Otherwise, I can help direct you to some other resources to find volunteer programs of interest. Feel free to email me.

Liz, I have been to Alaska. It was great. We met with a Travel Agent. She helped us a great deal. That is your best bet. We flew to Anchorage. first. Then stayed in a hotel Sheraton, arranged by our Travel Agent. We got to tour Anchorage. We there 12 hrs. Then we took the scenic train to Seward, and met the Cruise ship there. The cruise ship was Royal Caribbean. From there we hit all the major ports, Juneau, Mendehhall Glacier, Inside Passage, etc. We ended in Vancouver. It was a wonderful trip. One I will never forget. Go to your nearest travel agent. If you are in the Winchester, Va. area, go to [link removed]
Caravan Tours are great. Dan the Ranger works in Alaska and says RV Alaskan trips are terrific. They have a website. YOu must do a land and sea tour...part cruise and part on land. Princess and Royal Caribbean are my favs. Check it out.
I will be traveling with my husband to France in March. I am a teacher and school will still be in session. I'd like to connect with my students while I am gone. Any ideas on best way to connect? Ideas on Elemenary lessons from abroad?
After spending several summers as a tour guide.escort taking trips to the Canadian Rockies and Alaska, here are some recommendations:
The smaller the ship/boat, the better! The large cruise ships cannot get into many ports and scenic areas so you would need to pay exorbitant sums for 'optional' excursions. The passengers are also much friendlier and interesting on the smaller boats - many are international. This is in contrast with a ship of mostly senior Americans.
If you don't care about midnight buffets, third-rate talent shows, dressing up for a Captain's dinner, being herded onto a convoy of tour buses and trains, touristy/kitchy sites, then I would suggest that you look into the following site: alaska.org

Just tell them that you would prefer an educational trip and they will give you ideas of things to do that are not available to the commercial cruise lines and passengers. They will work within your budget guidelines.
You do need to see Denali, raft down the Nanana, ride on the White Pass Yukon Railroad, see whales, visit a working seaport and cannery, and meet the locals. I personally prefer the Ketchikan route over Sitka, but if you can get both, do it! While I HATE the cheesy entertainment aboard the cruises, I LOVE the vaudeville-esqueshows the students put on in the various towns - they're just pure fun!
The hotels in the interior are just so-so, even the cruise passengers get the same accommodations.
Brush up on your Robert Service Poetry, Jack London stories, learn to love all the ways salmon is served, understand that blueberries is THE desert, try the cariboo jerky, and take along plenty of insect repellent, a fly-swatter, and sunscreen.
Good luck!
P.S. Next time I visit Alaska, will be aboard the Alaska ferries and will book van tours.
Would you like the opportunity to travel (as a tour director, all expenses paid) with your students to such places as The Grand Canyon, The Florida Everglades, Yellowstone and many others to learn about these incredible wonders of the world in our own backyard?

If you want the experience of a life time check out this site. I am registered and ready to depart for Mexico this summer, It is not a typical tourist holiday as we stay on a 117' ship and visit the real Meixican people that live in small villages. I think this is going to be a way better time then sitting at an all inclusive resort for a week.

I'm 29 and looking to do something cool over the summer. I don't have a traveling companion, and would probably prefer to stay on continental North America or it's satellite islands.
Is there anything available for teachers? Or anything cool to do in general? Pref. with people of my age group?
