Firstly: Is your mother in good shape? There are some issues with altitude in Alaska.

After spending several summers as a tour guide.escort taking trips to the Canadian Rockies and Alaska, here are some recommendations:

The smaller the ship/boat, the better! The large cruise ships cannot get into many ports and scenic areas so you would need to pay exorbitant sums for 'optional' excursions. The passengers are also much friendlier and interesting on the smaller boats - many are international. This is in contrast with a ship of mostly senior Americans.

If you don't care about midnight buffets, third-rate talent shows, dressing up for a Captain's dinner, being herded onto a convoy of tour buses and trains, touristy/kitchy sites, then I would suggest that you look into the following site: alaska.org
