Wonderful! We start school mid-August and I would like to start my kids writing to their pen pals in September. We could write your class first and then you could match up my students with your students. When do you begin your school year? Would this work for you? Let me know what you think. Thanks Gail My e-mail is [email removed]
Any good suggestions for math or reading websites that are fun but actually accomplish somehting? Everything I am looking at are so ineffective other than the ones we purchase with a license at school and enroll students and keep track of scores. I'm looking for some summertime practice.
For math? Here are some: multiplication.com, sheppardssoftware.com (or something like that), roomrecess.com, hoodamath.com, and there's a cool game called bang the clock but I can't remember which site it is. My class uses all of these.
If ...See MoreImagine receiving over 50 postcards, one from each state. That is what a postcard exchange is. A great way to connect Common Core social studies with actual classrooms around the country.
Our exchange is pretty unique, because I have led it for 13 years! Most teachers stay in it, because we get such a high level of response.
If you teach in Montana, and are willing to mail out 51 postcards with information about your state glued on the back, contact me. I will provide you with labels of all the teacher addresses.
We mail in late October. Join us, you will not regret it. (Makes for a fantastic bulletin board inside or outside the classroom too!)

I NEED HELP! I was just notified that i would be teaching third grade this year and they start on the 14th of August. I have nothing no plans, nothing for my room, not even the slightest clue what I'm really doing. This is my first year teaching a class and i have no idea what I've gotten myself into.
Start by asking the principal for a copy of the third grade curriculum and standards and any text books used by that grade, and your class list. Also, students' bus assignments.
Get a copy of the schedule so you'll know when kids arrive, when they go to specials, lunch, recess, dismissal, and the times when teachers must be on duty (and where).
Meet up with any other third grade teachers in that school and ask for their support and suggestions (and extra materials) to get you started.
Arrange the classroom in a way that looks pleasing and workable. You can always change it around later if you find the arrangement doesn't work well.
Think about the *procedures* you want the kids to know about and practice on the first days (what they should do upon arrival in the classroom each day, lavatory visits, traveling to other parts of the school, handing out materials, pencil sharpening, preparing for dismissal, etc.) so that for the rest of the year they'll know what exactly they should do.
Really, meeting with at least one other helpful third grade teacher will help you prepare.
Good luck! Come back and tell us how it's going. We can help.
Hey! I teach 3rd grade in Madison, MS. I would. Love to find pin pals for my third grade students. I think it would be a great writing experience for them. Please email me if you are interested!
I've been teaching 22 years and have never had to teach groups in reading with centers going on... we have always had the Success for All program.
This year... we are teaching Journeys and Go Math and we have new science standards, social studies standards and a new principal and a new ap.
I am confused on how Journey's works...the timeline of a 90 minute reading block to accomplish reading..whole group and small groups and grammar and writing and spelling, etc.
