The best read aloud I have come across is Bruce Coville's Into the Land of the Unicorns. I have read it to 3rd-6th graders. They beg me to read it!! Even though it is about a girl and a unicorn, 6th grade boys even love it.

For the first day I like either Hooray for Diffendoofer Day by Dr Seuss or First Day Jitters. Read alouds - any of the Time Warp Trio books - I read one, and they can look for the rest, I also love Fantastic Mr Fox or James and the Giant Peach. Also any of Kate DiCamillo books, especially The Tale of Despereaux

Some of my favorites are Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism, The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, and The Mysterious Case of I.M. Fine (I think that is what it is called- it definitely has I.M. Fine in the title)
