This is my 4th year teaching 3rd grade. I have never before experiences such an inattentive group. The biggest problem is in the afternoon during math. As I am teaching our Saxon Math lesson, I look out into a sea of kids playing with their pencils, looking at the ceiling, touching their name plates, poking the book bin at their table...it's driving me insane. I only have 17 kids and I'd say at least 13 of them are constantly touching something or spacing out. I can't change the time of day we do math, and I can't change the Saxon math...what can I do?

arachgold How about passing out some manipulatives for them to use during the lesson. They may need more of a hands on approach.

Some ideas: Wipe off board for each child. Have them do a problem on the wipe off and hold it up for you to see when they are finished. When you nod, the student can erase. You can make them by inserting card stock in a p...See More
