my daughter with adhd/dyslexia

i live in indiana my 10 yr old were diagnosis by a doctor the school sent me to have her tested and she has adhd/dyslexia she is using the 504 plan for now it is not working for her i getting ready for a due process hearing to get her an iep to learn by when she spells a word like special she hears it as being spell(speshell) is the way she gets it and they say she does'nt need an iep to learn by what can i do besides fighting to get the iep for her? can i request to the school about the orton gillingham approach and see do they have any trained teachers inside our school corporation my child needs help and they say the 504 is fine all her grades is all F /D's can you give me some advice please?

My son also has dyslexia and was diagnosed in the fifth grade, he is now a 10th grader. I have an IEP in place. I have it structered around his learning disability, it does not take off for misspelling, and that no other child grade his papers and that it is elective for him to read alound, not forced. If he's comfortable reading aloud, so be it. If he feels like the kids will make fun of him, he's not penalized for it. Children can be very hurtful and it is embarrassing for any child, fifth grade or tenth, and hurts their self esteem. I want him to express himself without worring about spelling errors. Once they get into jr/high school and papers are typed they can use the assistance of spell checker - the same one every adult in college and real life use :-) Your child will succeed.

I will be honest, my child still doesn't read on grade level and has never enjoyed reading. I'm sure it's in part to his difficulties trying to see what the word was or meant that comprehension of the reading material just didn't happen. More frustration than anything. I realized as a parent for him to read he had to have something he enjoyed and that was interesting to him - the outdoors, hunting, fishing, etc. Those are the magazines I get for him - and he reads :-) I often smile when I see him in his room reading them. I do not think reading the material the school system assigns will make children enjoy reading, find something your child likes and encourage reading of that material. It's not how fast they read, just that they read and comprehend what they are reading. With that being said I know to pass school children have to read assisgnments - I have read the chapters to my son and when a book was assigned, I found it at your local library on books on tape. this worked well for us when he had literature. We took notes as we listed to the books, it helped alot. It is important to know that as the parent you will play a more dominate role in her learning material. You will learn what she learns and assist her with her homework and questions she doesn't understand. This is where the school/teachers fail your child and as parents we must pick up those pieces so our child does not fall through the cracks. good luck
