I teach 3rd - 5th grade and I'm finding that 5th graders have major attitude. They are definitely testing my patience. Most of the year they were pretty good, but the past few weeks they have been really difficult.

Does anyone have any good classroom management techniques specific to that age? Or that might work with 11 year olds??

Hi My teammate and I were just informed there may be some extra building money for us to purchase picture books to use in our 5th grade classrooms.

We want to use them as mentor texts - to teach leads/conclusions, for mini lessons for reading strategies, and maybe to practice summarizing.

Does anyone have favorite picture books th...See More

Anything by Patricia Polacco; most of Eve Bunting's books. Albert's Alphabet.

JenZ I don't have any specific Picture Book titles to buy but wanted you to be aware of this resource that offers these kind of books online for free. Works perfectly with a projector or SMART board.

I am wanting to incorporate a multicultural/traveling around the world theme into my third grade classroom all year long, as this is one of our major units in social studies. I'm not looking for lesson plans necessarily, but more bulletin board ideas. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Some ideas for bulletin board titles (but no though...See More

For bulletin boards, maybe something with a passport theme. Or maybe something with superlatives--the highest mountain, the tallest building, the longest river, t...See More

I have a parent that since the beginning of the year has driven me nuts. Ever since we met and the principal stated we needed to have his son evaluated for a learning disability he has driven me crazy. Some examples:

    1. He will go into my room even if I'm not there and start going through his son's desk, graded papers, etc. to find work hi...See More

Teach Do not meet with him alone! Require him to set up an appointment once a week with the principal, psychologist, counselor, etc. I like one post that said to refer him to your website. Also, I like the suggestion that you send a memo to all parents announcing your procedures for turning in homework, classwork, deadlines for makeup work, etc. Send tho...See More

NJ/4th Two words of advice: document everything!

I'm going through a very difficult year, but with a co-teacher. I learned quickly to document conversations, save emails, save copies of work, etc. If you haven't already, start a folder and document everything. Sometimes, when it's your word against his, documentation is all you can rely on. Good...See More

This site allows you to setup a TEACHER CLASSROOM and have all your students join and subscribe to the group. This is a fun, creative way for teachers to interact with their students online in a safe environment!
Does anyone have a subscription to the teachers' website Lesson Planet? Is it worth getting one?

I am what I consider a very experienced teacher. How do I deal with the fact that a first year teacher gave one of my old students a passing grade of a 'C' at report card time. This is a student who will not work in class and has a history of performing at a low level. He is about four grade levels behind. What's sad is that the parents have a fals...See More
