If you were a 5th grade science teacher and had $7500 to spend in your science program, what would you spend it on? I already have a smart board and an elmo.....
Hello all! I have seen an activity where students make coin purses out of a Tropicana OJ carton. Does anyone know how to do this? I was going to do this as an Earth day activity. Thanks so much! 4th Grade
Cybrary ManHere is a link to an Instructable on how to make a juice carton coin purse.

I did almost the same thing. I went from 13 years of teaching K to 4th grade self contained and then I taught 4th grade science one year. We are back to self contained again this year. Anyway.........the first day of 4th grade when the kids came into the room and sat down and started to work on their packet I had ready for them, I knew I was in heaven! No falling out of the seat, no crying, no tying shoes, no zipping up pants, but you still get the hugs! 4th grade is terrific.
Now about science! I highly recommend you get a copy of Sciencesaurus for yourself. I want a class set.......maybe your district can do that for you? (see link).
The next thing I recommend is you find a science mentor. Pick their brains, invite them to lunch, invite them to your classroom to give you tips. There are also many fabulous websites with good science tips and info. I love Steve Spangler..good ideas with videos.
Have fun! Teaching science and 4th grade is a blast!

My first suggestion is I would decide whether you are going to use the textbook or do units. You may do both. If you are going to rely heavily on the textbook, it is very important to teach your students how to read this. In my district, this is the first year students really start to use textbooks. I can almost guarantee if the dont this year, they will next year, so you really need to at least expose them to it this year. I spend te first couple of weeks of school going over a chapter and how to use sub-titles, use first and last sentences of papragraphs to find the main ideas and conclusions, etc. This takes time but will help you throughout the rest of the year. I also recommend you teaching them how to summarize....start with giving them a section in a textbook...pass out index cards and ask them to write the most important info on it. Then tell them to shut their books and give them a sticky note. Tell them to use just the index card and write info on the sticky note. This will help with using textbooks.
Also I use alot of LABS. I have found my studnets learn more from them than the textbooks alone.
Fourth grade is GREAT! It is a very important year- the expectations change drastically. But the kids are at a wonderful age!
Good luck!

The kids love seeing themselves on the t.v. and it allows for me to have a quick conversation with one parent while the others are viewing the slideshow. I have it continuously loop on the television, so if a parent comes in late, they can still catch their child.
I also have the students write letters to their parents. The students are always excited to have their parents read their writing.

Adding to the collection presented in March (see [link removed]).
Here's just a sample from April's collection of resources for those planning an exciting and effective Earth Day observation!
* Earth Day/Earth Protectors * Earth Day in Kindergarten * Earth Day compilation * Measuring the Earth * Earth's Atmosphere * How Much Garbage Do We Produce? * Rainforest theme * Air Pollution * Making paper * Arbor Day cloze Add to that list, PRINTABLES for Earth Day!
There's much more! Don't forget the Teachers.Net Earth Day/Eco Chatboard [link removed]
Hey, Kat! Love this idea and I plan to borrow it for next year's class - may even start this once we review for EOG.
Not sure how SRA boxes are since we don't have them at our school but this may work for you. Is there anyway you can split up the SRA box between several boxes? Each of my students has a reading folder that I've got split into groups so there are 5-6 folders per crate. When students need to get their folders they just simply walk to their crate, grab the folder, and go where they need to go. This is much easier for them, me, and things don't get lost in the abyss they call a desk! :)
CullenA game that I've played before a few times is Magic Trash. I pick a piece of trash from the floor, the kids pick up, and whomever picks up that piece gets a piece of candy.
As a sub I have noticed that many many teachers use an overhead transparency to do some kind of Language arts activity on a daily basis to start out the day. I've developed a set of 40 ready to print activities to use on a daily bais to teach the use of phrases and clauses in writing. WANT TO TRY IT? Send me an e-mail: [email removed]
I would buy the Delta Education Kits or FOSS Kits. All your supplies are in one place and really to be used.
