OK Texas teachers...What are your favorite resources to use for the conventions part of the TAKS writing test? We have the TAKS Master book, Step Up to TAKS, and Measuring Up (which isn't that great for writing!), but we are needing some more resources to use with our small groups and tutoring sessions. We are really needing something that breaks the practice down by skill, rather than just a hodge podge of questions with a passage, but any suggestions are welcomed!! Thanks in advance for your help!!
Diane McKenzie Moose English breaks the conventions down into spelling, captialization, punctuation, and usage mini-lessons AND ties them into creating a piece of writing a step at a time.

E-mail me if you need any more information. The website linked here shows the content of the 40 2-page lessons in the book.

Jennifer I use a combination of the Shurley method, our grammar book, and TAKS Masters. For TAKS masters, We made numerous copies and then cut up the questions and gave one question for each story. This way you can teach skill specific. If a publisher would ever make a skill specific writing book, they would make a fortune.

Hope this helps.

And its amazing how easy it is to combine sentences when you've actually learned about c...See More

Daniella Kamico makes 2 different books. One is just TAKS stories. The other is games to run and make, plus it has practice pages divided into 3 categories... 1. sentence structure 2. usage 3. mechanics.

I am at home having a snow day so I can't tell you what each is called, but you can probably look it up or email me if you can't find it and want...See More

msg/4th/Tx Have you tried TAKS Coach? It's broken down into sections like Capitalization, Punctuation, Spelling, Adjectives/Adverbs, Subject Verb Agreement and Sentences (Complete, Incomplete).
