Hello! How do you get your students to answer short answer question (or any question!!) in complete sentences?? I teach third graders. Its half-way through the year! I am thinking of tatooing "answer in complete sentences" across my forehead! Thanks for any input! Amy K.

Lady J Thanks! I guess an easy way to explain it to kids is that if they restate the question, then they are more likely to understand what the question is asking. I'll start tomorrow with my oral answers such as "Yes, Mary, you may go to the restroom".

4th Answering in complete sentences also helps a child to prepare a study guide for himself. I frequently assign questions that children need to know for a test. When the student looks in his notes and the answer to question #1 is "It has decreased.", that doesn't help a lot, even though he has written a complete sentence. Margo I explicitly teacher this, and often I will guide them by asking the class "How would you use the question to start your answer?" I then write an appropriate reply at the front. I do this a few times so job their memories about how to write in full sentences when answering questions.
