We are going to see a play next week for Black History Month.Showing the courtroom scene from "To Kill a Mockingbird" was suggested by the college that's putting on the play "Color of Justice." I wanted to show the entire movie...in two parts (it's two hours and ten minutes). A veteran teacher was really surprised and told me she thought that it was "over their heads." I'm sure that I saw it for the first time at this age. I remember relating to Scout....I'm forty seven and it still moves me. What do you think?? Thanks!

Linda/OH Gosh, I didn't read it until college (Guess, I'm of an older generation...) How will you handle the court room scene about the rape? My gut is that it is way too mature for 5th grade! It's a classic , but surely much more appropriate for those with more life experience.

It takes a great deal more maturity and critical thinking skills to give this book the kind of consideration it warrrents. There are plenty of other books whose theme revolves around the similar issues (other than rape) that are better suited to ...See More

5th Grade Teacher I have taught 5th grade for 18 of the last 21 years, and I push the envelope a lot with what I read and talk about with my kids, but I wouldn't even think about showing or reading this book. There is a lot of good literature out there that has to do with racism and prejudice that is much more appropriate for the age - anything by Mildred D. Taylor,...See More
