am I expecting to much??????

Hello,

I am a third year 4th grade teacher. I was just wondering if I am expecting to much of my students.....When I hand out work or items that parents need to sign, like permission slips I expect them to not lose them. I remind them to put them in their binders, folders etc and not to lose them....but I still have a couple of students that still lose them. I have helped them organize their desks and folders etc. I have told them I will no longer give them copies of work etc that they have lost. WHen they tell me they lost something I am starting to have no empathy about it....I feel like they need to be responsible for thier things..they need to learn this....

Am I expecting to much or being to harsh?

Tayy You are not expecting to much. I expect the same of my fourth graders. When they lose important papers, they lose work habits points. They don't like to lose points so they think twice before they ask me for another copy of something. This encourages them to keep up with it the first time and if they lose it to look for it. The logic of this has always baffled me. Why do we pull support because the support will be pulled in the next year? The reason to pull support is because they've learned the skill. Do you stop taking an antibiotic while you're still sick? If you know they're going to need know fractions for the grade ahead, do you stop teaching fractions? Or do you review them all through the year to keep it fresh in their mind? We do math maintenance to keep them fresh on the operations we've taught them. Why do less with organization? It's less important than math?

This is February - you could be giving them 5 more months of organizational instruction - you could give them instruction up to the last day of the grade - and would it be too much? You're not withdrawing organizational instruction and support because you think they've mastered it - at least that's not what you're saying. You're withdrawing it now because it will be withdrawn from them in September. Are they ready to fly? Does a bird push the kids from the next before they're ready to fly?

How? By pushing them out of the next in February? What are you preparing them for? The shock? Preparation is continued instruction - not the lack of it. You could pull support in May, not February, and still give them a good taste of it. There's no logic to what you're saying. It sounds as if you're sick of their disorganization and there's a punishing quality to what you're doing.

Well, do you expect them to know all of the operations of fractions when you've only taught them half of them? What source tells you or any of us how long it takes kids to learn organization? We know that it takes about 3 years for children to learn to talk. If they're not talking by three, we wonder if something's wrong. We know it usually takes about 10 days of antibiotic treatment to recover from an ear infection. Who told us a half year was enough time to teach organization? What source did that come from?

a bit of advice Dear Nicky ~ One thing I have learned to do when a student tells me s/he has lost a paper is to ask them to look for it in a veru specific place. For example, when I give out an important paper, I'll instruct the students to put it in their "take home" folders. Then, I'll ask them to partner check to make sure their partner's paper is in that folde...See More
