I have a few students who are terrible spellers. They manage to pass their weekly spelling tests, often with 100s because they're good at memorizing. Once the test is over, they forget everything they learned. At conferences a parent had asked for advice on helping her daughter become a better speller. All I could offer was that she study her spelling words. There's got to be a better way. Anyone know it? :o)
cheryl I will give written assignments in which I purposely grade for spelling and punctuation. I may give my 5th graders a homework assignment where they need to write a paragraph about what they read.
