OK, I've got an issue in my class that is driving me nuts. My students won't pick up after themselves! I find books, pencils, papers, etc. all over the floor, at the computer, in the reading center. I have two students who pick up at the end of the day and it looks great, however, once the bell rings it's like a tornado went through. If students read anywhere other than their desk, they leave things everywhere. I've taken my books from them, they're not allowed to leave their seats, etc. Papers automatically go in the recycle bin, pencils in my pencil cup, books from the library are taken downstairs and checked in (noting the name so that person can be reminded). It's obvious they don't have to clean up after themselves at home. Donna/WI I have periodic mini-pick-up times throughout the day .... 30 second pickups...before recess, lunch, dismissal, etc. ... the kids think it is fun to see how much can be accomplished in a short time, and not once have we missed out on any of the activities that have followed.

Right after lunch they take 15 minutes, clean the halls, sweep, bathrooms etc. Not just elementary schools, but at the high school too. I won't even go into taking off shoes at s...See More

Cullen A game that I've played before a few times is Magic Trash. I pick a piece of trash from the floor, the kids pick up, and whomever picks up that piece gets a piece of candy.

tmp Recently I asked my students to look around the room and tell me what a visitor would think if they walked in to see the mess. We talked about how we show pride in our things by the way we take care of them. Then I gave them about 2 minutes to clean up. We looked around again and talked about how fast and easy it was and what a difference it made i...See More
