I play a vocabulary word review game with my students called "Wordo". I found this in Timothy Rasinski's book, "Essential Strategies for Word Study". It's like Bingo, played on the same kind of a card, you write about 20 different words that you have studied and are studying now, the students choose 16 of them to write on their wordo card. As you read the definition, they put a marker on each word. My kids love this, even though I work with third graders, I bet your sophomores would love playing this as well, especially if you give treats for those who get a "Wordo". Good Luck!

The program itself is free, and you get a deposit of credits (100 credits - school, 5 credits - each student) for an extended trial.
It's very cool, because it keeps track of what each student knows and personalized practice, better than a live mentor would. It also offers rewards, which our students love (I'm teaching fourth grade).
Third graders can use the program free, because it's a nonprofit and I hear they will make it completely free for everybody soon
Balderdash is a board game for adults and children. The idea of the game is to create definitions for strange, unknown vocabulary words. I'm teaching my students the game this week. Next week they'll apply it when I introduce new vocabulary words. This is a classic game and works well in a Language Arts classroom.

I would encourage primary teachers to google YouTube for Anita Archer videos. She has a clip of herself teaching new vocabulary to first grade students. The method could be used K-3. I'm fortunate in that my county office purchased a complete set of her teaching videos. She is awesome!
